Rome ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Airport Transportation Guide Ciampino To Termini

Welcome to our guide to Ciampino Rome Airport! We'll walk you through everything you need to know, starting with the moment you land in Rome. We'll take you across the tarmac and inside the airport, giving you tips on what to expect. Then, we'll explore the various transportation options to get you into the heart of Rome - from buses, taxis, and the metro, to the easiest way to catch a train straight to Termini Station. Whether you're a first-time or seasoned visitor, this guide will ensure a smooth transfer into the city.
Let's get started!

Rome Landing

You are landing in Rome, and by choosing to fly into Ciampino instead of Fiumicino, you're already closer to the heart of the Italian capital and it will cost you less to reach the center, but we’ll talk about that later! One of the best perks of this airport? If you snag a window seat on the right side of the plane, you’re in for a treat! For over two minutes during your descent, you get stunning aerial views of Rome's most iconic landmarks - the Vatican, the Altare della Patria, and even the Colosseum. It's like a mini sightseeing tour before you even touch down!

Walking The Tarmac

As we walk the tarmac of Ciampino Airport, you'll notice there’s no bus to shuttle us to the terminal, but don’t worry - it’s a short walk. Even when the weather's bad, there's a basic canopy overhead to keep you dry. Ciampino is a smaller airport compared to Fiumicino, which makes getting through it much quicker. This airport has a rich history too - opened in 1916, it was once Rome's main airport and even served as a military base during World War II. Now, it's favored by budget travelers and those seeking a quick, easy entry into the city.

Inside The Airport

The official full name is Giovanni Battista Pastine Airport (CIA), just 12 KM away from Rome. It was Rome's main airport until 1960. It only has a single terminal and we are now inside the baggage claim area. There is a big parking area, which you can book online. For more links check the official page https://www.adr.it/web/aeroporti-di-roma-en/pax-cia-ciampino

Keep an eye on these red ticket machines! We’ll talk about them in a minute! In this area you can also find toilet facilities and some vending machines.

How To Get To Rome

Now, let’s walk out to the bus area.

These are the stairs you walk to get out. To the left in the back, you can see the taxi area.

Pay attention to the taxi's side door for a big sign with a fixed price for the route to the center. At the time of uploading this video it was 30 euros. It can be more if you choose a taxi that does not operate on a fixed price. If there is no traffic it might take you a bit over 20 minutes to reach the center.

Now, if you opt for a bus there are several companies, departing from this area.

It shouldn’t cost you more than 7 euros and you should reach the center, more specifically Roma Termini station, in 30 – 40 minutes. These are coaches so they are more comfortable than the plain public buses, with more space for luggage. Online tickets have a discount. Sometimes, on the busy hours of the day, we suggest you pre book to avoid waiting for the next bus!

There’s also a bus option that takes you to Leonardo da Vinci Fiumincino airport, but it usually involves a change in Termini, which results on a trip duration of over 75 minutes.

Now, you would think it’s best to take the metro for the center, right? Well, it’s neither the fastest nor the cheapest option! You first have to ride a bus to a metro station named Anagnina, the start of the metro line. From then, you naturally board the metro to the center. That’s 15 stops and over 20 minutes of time just being inside the metro, not to count the bus time from the airport!

Train To Termini

Here’s a cheap and fast alternative. Ciampino Airlink. Do you remember the red ticked machines we saw at the baggage claim area? That’s what they’re used for!

This service combines a bus from Ciampino Airport to Ciampino town, followed by a train to Roma Termini. The total cost is about €2.70. As soon as you get out of the airport you can see the red bus that will take you in some minutes to the Ciampino train station and then you board the train to Termini. The benefit in that way is that you won’t stop at a traffic jam that is bound to happen if you preferred a bus or a taxi from the airport.

Inside Ciampino airport, the Departures Terminal is open at night, from 11.00pm to 4.00am, exclusively for passengers holding a travel document valid for the next 24 hours.

This is the train that connects Ciampino to Termini. The actual train trip will not take over 15 minutes. Here are some details about the Termini metro station: It is located in Piazza dei Cinquecento, directly beneath the Termini rail terminal. This station is significant not only for its role in train travel but also as an interchange for the Rome Metro, connecting two major lines: Line A and Line B. There is also a new metro line under construction.
