A GLIMPSE INTO HISTORY
The Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, known in Croatian as Tehnički muzej Nikola Tesla, stands proudly on Savska cesta 18 in Zagreb. Established in 1954 and opened to the public on January 14, 1963, this museum was conceived by the visionary professor Božo Težak from the Faculty of Science at the University of Zagreb. Professor Težak imagined a place where the marvels of technology and natural sciences could be explored in an engaging, educational manner.
The museum’s location itself is steeped in history. Originally, from the late 19th century until 1936, the site served as the first tram depot for Zagreb Electric Tram (ZET). Evidence of its past lives on in the form of an excavated tram track discovered in the museum's courtyard during renovations—a silent reminder of the ever-evolving narrative of urban transport and technological progress in Croatia.

In June 2015, a significant moment in the museum's timeline came when the City Assembly of Zagreb decided to rename the institution in honor of Nikola Tesla, one of history’s most influential inventors and a symbol of modern innovation. During our visit to the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, we felt an overwhelming sense of connection to the past—a journey that bridged the gap between historical marvels and contemporary technological achievements. Walking through the corridors, we were captivated by the intricate details of each exhibit.
Later, we ventured into the Nikola Tesla Demonstration Cabinet, where live experiments illuminated Tesla’s visionary theories on electricity. These moments were not just informative—they were inspiring, igniting a newfound appreciation for the relentless human pursuit of progress.
The museum also offers playful and educational spaces, such as the Planetarium and the Apisarium (demonstration beehives). The planetarium, in particular, stood out with its immersive visual journey through the cosmos.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR THE MODERN EXPLORER
The Nikola Tesla Technical Museum is not just a repository of historical artifacts—it is a living, breathing center for education, creativity, and community engagement. Open from Tuesday to Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, and on weekends from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the museum welcomes visitors with a promise of discovery and wonder. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays, so plan your visit accordingly.

Tram Access: Tramway numbers 3, 4, 9, 12, 13, 14, and 17 serve stops at ‘Tehnički muzej’ and ‘Studentski centar.’
Parking: A public pay car park is available right next to the museum. Organized groups can even park buses in the museum’s courtyard.
