We begin our journey at Fortress Square, a place steeped in history and surrounded by ancient ruins. Though we’ll revisit this area later, for now, we descend cobblestone streets lined with charming tavernas and lively cafés. Traditional gyro spots tempt us with the mouthwatering aroma of sizzling meats, while quaint bakeries and dessert shops showcase Greece’s culinary richness.
This area is a perfect introduction to Larissa’s unique blend of history and modern life. Alongside centuries-old structures, you’ll find a buzzing energy from locals and visitors alike. Square of Mayor Agamemnon Blanas
Next, we arrive at the Square of Mayor Agamemnon Blanas, a cultural and historical focal point.
As we explore the square, we notice the Music School of Larissa nearby, a testament to the city’s dedication to nurturing creativity and preserving its cultural roots.
As we pass the music school, across the street to the left, the Yeni Mosque draws our attention.
Built during the Ottoman era, this architectural treasure once served as the Archaeological Museum until 2021.
Its ornate design, with intricate patterns and domed roofs, reflects Larissa’s multicultural past and offers a unique glimpse into its Ottoman influence.
At the center of the square are the remnants of Justinian’s fortifications, a symbol of Larissa’s significance during the Byzantine era.
These ancient walls remind us of the city’s strategic importance and resilience through centuries of change.

Walking down Kiprou Street, we arrive at Mayor Sapkas Square, the bustling epicenter of modern Larissa. This lively plaza is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and transport hubs, with locals and visitors mingling in its vibrant atmosphere.
The square is named after a beloved mayor who played a key role in shaping Larissa into the thriving city it is today. Modern Larissa is home to over 160,000 residents, making it one of Greece’s most important regional hubs. Here, you’ll find people sipping coffee at outdoor cafés, browsing nearby shops, or simply enjoying the city’s vibrant energy. With its convenient central location and lively surroundings, Sapkas Square is the perfect place to experience Larissa’s heartbeat.

During our stay, we found ourselves navigating this pedestrianized zone to locate our hotel’s parking—a bit of an adventure in itself! However, the process added to the charm of Larissa’s unique blend of old-world character and modern conveniences.
Beyond shopping, the city center offers a wide array of dining options. From cozy cafés serving locally roasted coffee to restaurants offering traditional Greek dishes, there’s plenty to keep your taste buds entertained. The pedestrian area’s lively energy makes it the perfect place to pause, enjoy a meal, and soak in the essence of the city.
Larissa’s central shopping district isn’t just about retail—it’s a reflection of the city’s modern culture and its vibrant community life.
Ancient Ruins

Year-round, the city comes alive after dark, with locals filling the pedestrian streets, stopping to browse store displays, or enjoying an evening walk. The combination of warm lighting and lively chatter makes Larissa feel welcoming and safe, even late into the night.
The city’s bars and tavernas also come alive after sundown, offering a variety of atmospheres to suit every mood. Whether you prefer a quiet glass of wine at a cozy corner spot or an energetic night out at a lively bar, there’s something for everyone. The streets are particularly lively, buzzing with nightlife and social gatherings.
Exploring these streets at night is an experience of its own—calm yet lively, historic yet modern, offering a snapshot of Larissa’s vibrant soul.
