OPERATING FREQUENCY
Trains run frequently, with intervals of every 3.5 minutes.
This time will be reduced to 90 seconds by the end of 2025, with the completion of the expansion line to Kalamaria.
The system’s efficiency means you’ll rarely have to wait long for your next ride.

THE TIME IT TAKES
The underground journey on a Thessaloniki Metro train from one end of the city to the other - from Nea Elvetia to the New Railway Station - takes 17 minutes, including stops at all 13 stations.
The average speed of each train is 40 km/h, with a maximum speed of 80 km/h. Therefore, each passenger will need just 40 seconds to travel from one station to the next.
The 18 trains on the main line, which operate without a driver, can accommodate 465 passengers (both seated and standing).

EXPECTED TRAFFIC
The anticipated daily passenger traffic is 254,000 passengers, with a transport capacity of 18,000 passengers per hour per direction.
The Kalamaria extension is projected to add another 78,000 to 80,000 passengers daily.
Additionally, it is estimated that approximately 57,000 fewer private vehicles will be on the roads daily, leading to a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions by 212 tons per day.

INNOVATIONS
18 fully automated, air-conditioned trains with 4 cars each, operating without a driver.

Automatic door systems at every station to ensure maximum passenger safety while waiting on platforms.

Train movements are controlled through wireless communication, transmitted 5-10 times per second, with position accuracy of approximately 1 meter.

Operational data for each train is transmitted wirelessly via the same transmission system and a unified antenna.

High-definition cameras are installed inside and outside the trains, including the front and rear sections, with the capability for online video streaming to the Operations Control Center.

Train materials are selected with a low fire load, are over 95% recyclable, and environmentally friendly.
