Welcome to this tour of Rome's bustling Termini Central Station! We'll explore the vibrant Mercato Centrale, where flavors and aromas fill the air, before venturing around the station's lively surroundings. Afterwards, we’ll descend into the metro, showcasing the pulse of the city's underground life, before taking you back up to experience the station's grand interiors.
Location and Setting
Mercato Centrale Roma is located within the Roma Termini railway station, specifically in the historic Cappa Mazzoniana, a monumental hall with high vaulted ceilings. This market is a must-visit for food lovers traveling to Rome, offering a culinary experience that goes beyond the typical fast food found in train stations.
It hosts various artisanal food stalls, providing a wide variety of culinary options, including steaks, burgers, pasta, pizza, empanadas, sweets, and gelato. It is an ideal place to savor authentic and traditional foods in an extraordinary setting. We were there early in the day, but as time passes, many people will visit it. The ground floor features a sitting area for any stall. The top floors are occupied by specific restaurants, each with its own seating area as you can see. Mercato Centrale Roma is known for its ability to combine products from different regions of Italy. It’s open all week long, from 7:30 AM – 12 AM.
Mercato Centrale Roma opened on October 5, 2016. It occupies approximately 150 square meters of the old "dopo lavoro ferroviario" building. Given its location within Rome Termini Station, one of the busiest train stations in Europe with an estimated 480,000 daily passengers, it enjoys a significant foot traffic.
However, specific visitor numbers for the market alone are not publicly available.
There’s
a supermarket just some meters to the left, open until 9 PM weekly.
And
that’s the area on the other side, close to Mercato, where you can take the bus
to Ciampino airport. Talking about that, here’s an alternative suggestion:
Around The Station
We are disembarking from the train, after having used Ciampino Airlink. This service combines a bus from Ciampino Airport to Ciampino town, followed by a train to Roma Termini. The total cost is about €2.70. As soon as you get out of the airport you can see the red bus that will take you in some minutes to the Ciampino train station and then you board the train to Termini. The benefit that way is that you won’t stop in a traffic jam which is bound to happen if you prefer a bus or a taxi from the airport.
We are now walking inside Termini to
reach the main area.
If you prefer, you can get out to the
bus and taxi area and head right to an alternative metro area, in case you wish
to avoid the large crowds at the main area. If you do so, the drawback is that
you will have to walk the stairs, there’s no escalator.
Using The Metro
Here are some details about the Termini metro station: It is located in Piazza dei Cinquecento, directly beneath the Termini rail terminal. This station is significant not only for its role in train travel but also as an interchange for the Rome Metro, connecting two major lines: Line A and Line B.
Line A runs
from Battistini to Anagnina, connecting various important areas
of the city, including the Vatican and Spanish Steps.
Line B extends
from Laurentina to Rebibbia or Jonio, linking key
sites such as the Colosseum and Circus Maximus.
Termini is currently the only station
in the Rome Metro system that serves both lines, making it a vital point for
commuters and tourists alike.
There is also a new metro line under construction.
Inside Termini
Rome's Termini Station is a bustling
transportation hub that offers more than just train departures. Inside, you'll
find a maze of ticket machines interspersed with a variety of shops, including
clothing retailers. Large electronic boards display departure times, but with
numerous train lines operating, it can sometimes be challenging to locate your
specific information.
To escape the station's hustle and bustle, head to the terrace. There, you'll discover a smaller food court brimming with options. From quick caffeine fixes and panini to more substantial meals, you can find something to suit every taste while enjoying a brief respite from the station's activity.
