📍 Port Taverns & Shops
We have just disembarked the ferry and we walk to this area, having the port to our right.
Before we proceed with the details, we have a separate video on how to reach Limenas Town.
The area to the right features a taxi
spot. There is also another taxi service area before we turn to the old port,
at the main waterfront, which we will visit later.
This charming waterfront area may be just under 500 meters in length, but it’s brimming with delightful spots waiting to be discovered! Along this scenic stretch, you’ll find a colorful toy store perfect for picking up a little memento, cozy cafes and canteens offering a quick bite or a refreshing drink, and even a 24-hour convenience store that has you covered any time of day or night. Of course, the stars of the show are the many inviting taverns and restaurants, each offering a taste of authentic Greek cuisine.
Let’s take a leisurely stroll along
the waterfront so we can get a closer look at all these hidden gems! Even
though it's just past noon, you might notice that some of the taverns are
already bustling with people—an early sign of the lively atmosphere that
continues well into the evening. We’ve done a bit of research for you, and it
turns out most of these charming eateries open their doors right at 12 PM,
ready to welcome you with open arms and mouthwatering dishes!

🌅 Waterfront
West & East
We've
now left the port behind and are making our way toward the heart of the main
waterfront. To our right, just beside the now-deserted Xenia Hotel, you’ll
notice a free parking area. While it’s convenient, be prepared for a bit of a
bumpy ride since it’s just a dirt road.
To
make your stroll along the waterfront even more enjoyable, we’ve divided the
walk into two parts. The first part, which stretches to the midpoint of the
waterfront, is a leisurely 300 meters long. As we walk along, you’ll spot a
variety of cozy coffee shops and inviting restaurants, offering a delightful
mix of local and international flavors. You’ll even find a pizzeria and a spot
serving the famous loukoumades, though these delicious treats are only
available in the evening.
Speaking
of loukoumades, do you know what they are? Let us enlighten you! Loukoumades
are a traditional Greek dessert, consisting of small, golden-brown dough balls
that are deep-fried to perfection. Once crispy on the outside and fluffy on the
inside, they are typically drizzled with honey, sprinkled with cinnamon, and
sometimes garnished with a sprinkle of crushed nuts. These bite-sized delights
are a must-try, offering a sweet taste of Greek culture that’s hard to resist.
Now,
let’s continue our walk until we reach Archeologikis Scholis Street. From
there, we’ll move on to the second part of the waterfront, where you’ll
discover even more charming shops and eateries, offering everything from hearty
breakfasts to relaxing cafés. The journey is just beginning!
This
vertical street, Archeologikis Scholis, marks our transition to the eastern
part of the waterfront. Later we’ll take a stroll down the road
to the right, where you’ll find most of the memento shops and fast food
spots—perfect for grabbing a quick bite or picking up a souvenir. But for now,
let’s continue straight ahead.
As
we mentioned earlier, this area is dotted with inviting cafés and breakfast
spots. Take a moment to notice the signs—they’re not just in Greek or English,
but also in other languages, enticing you to step inside and explore their
offerings!
You
might be familiar with a classic omelette, but have you ever heard of bougatsa?
Those tempting signs you see are practically calling your name, so why not give
it a try?
Now,
let us fill you in on the delicious details! Bougatsa is a traditional
Greek pastry that’s beloved for its crispy, flaky layers of phyllo dough,
encasing a rich and creamy filling. The most common fillings are sweet, like
custard or creamy semolina, and the pastry is typically dusted with powdered
sugar and cinnamon. However, there are savory versions too, often filled with
cheese or minced meat. Whether you prefer sweet or savory, bougatsa is a
must-try treat that offers a taste of Greece with every bite.
You
can enjoy your bougatsa right here, sitting at one of these charming
cafés, or grab it as a takeaway snack to savor as you continue your walk.
Either way, it’s a delicious experience you won’t want to miss!
🏛️ To The Old
Port & Old Port Harbor
Do
you see that traditional building, Kalogeriko? That’s our next destination!
It’s less than 300 meters away from where we are now! Let’s walk the area!
This
Old Port of Thassos is a captivating blend of history, charm, and vibrant life
that offers visitors a glimpse into the island's rich past and its modern-day
allure.
Historical
Significance:
The
Old Port dates back to ancient times, serving as a crucial hub for trade and
transportation in the Aegean Sea. Thassos was known for its marble, timber, and
wine, and the port played a vital role in exporting these goods to the wider
Mediterranean region. The remnants of the ancient walls and fortifications
around the port hint at its strategic importance, offering a connection to the
island's storied past.
Important
Buildings:
As
you explore the Old Port, you'll notice several significant buildings that
reflect the island's heritage. One of the most notable is the Ancient Agora,
located just a short walk from the port, to the right. This archaeological site
was the heart of ancient Thassos, a bustling marketplace where trade, politics,
and daily life converged. Nearby, the Archaeological Museum of Thassos
houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including statues, pottery, and
inscriptions that tell the story of the island’s rich history.
Water
Tours:
The
Old Port is not just a place of historical interest; it’s also a gateway to
maritime adventures. Several companies offer water tours from the port,
allowing visitors to explore the crystal-clear waters around Thassos. These
tours often include stops at secluded beaches, snorkeling spots, and sometimes
even dolphin-watching opportunities. One popular excursion is a boat trip to
the nearby Marble Beach, famous for its brilliant white pebbles and
turquoise waters.
Taverns
and Dining:
Lining
the waterfront are some traditional taverns where you can indulge in the local
cuisine while soaking up the port's serene atmosphere. These eateries serve a
variety of dishes, from fresh seafood caught daily by local fishermen to hearty
Greek staples like moussaka and souvlaki. Some of the taverns
have been family-run for generations, offering recipes passed down through the
years, giving you a true taste of Thassian hospitality. We’ve been visiting the
island for decades and we can witness little change to this area!
Atmosphere
and Experience:
The
Old Port is a place where time seems to slow down. By day, it’s a picturesque
spot for a leisurely stroll, with boats gently bobbing in the water and the sun
casting a warm glow over the stone-paved streets. As the day fades into
evening, the port comes alive with the soft hum of conversations, the clinking
of glasses, and the aroma of grilled seafood wafting through the air. The view
of the sunset over the Aegean, with the ancient walls as a backdrop, is nothing
short of magical.
Whether
you’re drawn by its historical allure, the promise of a culinary journey, or
the call of the sea, the Old Port of Thassos offers an experience that is as
rich and varied as the island itself.
🎨 Kalogeriko Museum
Kalogeriko
in Limenas, Thassos is a stunning example of traditional island architecture!
This beautifully preserved building stands proudly at the old port, with its
stone walls, wooden balconies, and tiled roof capturing the essence of Thassos'
heritage. Once a monk's residence, Kalogeriko has been transformed into a
cultural hub, hosting exhibitions, workshops, and events that celebrate the
island's rich history and vibrant arts scene.
If
you manage to step inside, as it’s sadly usually closed, you can explore
rotating art displays, or attend one of the cultural events that bring this
historical gem to life. With its panoramic views of the harbor and the
surrounding town, Kalogeriko offers not only a window into the past but also a
vibrant connection to the present.
🍹 Miaouli
Beach Bars & Restaurants
This
could very well be the central hub for most tourists, so let’s give it the
attention it deserves! Welcome to Miaouli, the lively seaside road that
stretches out before us for the next 500 meters—a vibrant waterfront lined with
a delightful mix of cafés, taverns, and beach bars, each offering something
unique for you to enjoy.
As
we stroll along Miaouli, you'll notice a variety of establishments, all with
their own distinct charm. While we’re not affiliated with any of them, we’re
excited to showcase them all so you can explore your options and find the
perfect spot for your day by the sea.
What’s
particularly interesting here is how some of these beach bars are designed as
mixed-use spaces. You'll find areas with separate tables for dining, where you
can sit down for a meal, enjoy a coffee, sip on a refreshing cocktail, or even
indulge in a shisha session—all while soaking up the sun and sea breeze.
This
beach area is not just beautiful; it’s also well-maintained and safe. The beach
has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, a mark of high environmental and
quality standards. Plus, there’s a lifeguard on duty, providing extra peace of
mind, especially if you’re visiting with young children. As you can see, the
waters at the start of the beach are shallow, making it ideal for little ones
to splash around safely.
You'll
find all the expected facilities here, including showers, restrooms, and
changing rooms, with specific accommodations for disabled visitors, ensuring
that everyone can enjoy a day at the beach with ease.
Isn't
that just delightful? Imagine this: you’re lounging by the beach, soaking up
the sun, when you hear the cheerful calls of local fruit sellers making their
way along the shoreline. These vendors drive by in their cars, offering an
array of fresh, juicy fruits, from succulent melons to refreshing watermelons,
all harvested straight from the fields. It’s like nature’s snack bar, delivered
right to your beach towel!
There's something so charming about buying fruit directly by the beach, knowing that it’s as fresh as can be. The fruit sellers take pride in their produce, and you can taste the difference with each bite—sweet, ripe, and full of flavor, just the way nature intended. So, as you relax with the sound of the waves and the warmth of the sun, why not indulge in a piece of sun-ripened melon or a slice of cool watermelon? It’s the perfect way to refresh yourself on a beautiful day by the sea!
🌴 Karnagio Beach Bar & View
We
had 3 good reasons to include this area.
It’s
location, the service it offers and the panoramic views!
But
let’s take things from the start!
It’s
a separate beach bar at the end of the waterfront, after the Miaouli Street we
passed.
You
can either use the beach facilities or have a snack and a drink here.
Most
would naturally prefer this area with the sunloungers for sunbathing and a
swim.
We
actually prefer to turn right and reach the secluded bar.
We
might not have a view of Limenas Town but the wild scenery with the rocky
coastline and the calm ways appears more inviting to our preference!
You
can either just enjoy a cocktail or have a light snack.
But
that’s not all!
If
you climb just some stairs up and right, you will find a secret chapel that not many know exists!
It’s
the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles overlooking Limenas and the east
coastline of the island!
This
is also a great sunrise spot!
You
can walk even further up if you want to reach the premises of the Ancient
Theater of Thasos.
Sadly,
at the time of writing this, the Theater was still under renovation.
The
Ancient Theater of Thassos: A Timeless Gem
Perched
atop a hill overlooking the bustling port of Limenas, the Ancient Theater of
Thassos stands as a testament to the island's rich history and cultural
heritage. Dating back to the 5th century BC, this impressive structure offers
visitors a glimpse into the vibrant life of ancient Greece.
A
Theater of Nature and History
Crafted
into a natural hollow in the hillside, the theater boasts a unique blend of
architectural ingenuity and natural beauty. Its semicircular seating area,
known as the koilon, once accommodated thousands of spectators. The stage, or
proscenium, was adorned with elaborate decorations and provided the backdrop
for dramatic performances.
A
Stage for Tragedy and Comedy
The
Ancient Theater of Thassos played a central role in the cultural life of the
island. It served as a venue for theatrical productions, including tragedies,
comedies, and satyr plays. These performances were a source of entertainment,
education, and civic pride for the ancient Greeks.
A
Modern-Day Landmark
Today, the Ancient Theater remains a popular attraction for visitors to Thassos. Its well-preserved ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into the past, and its scenic location provides stunning panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea.
Whether
you're a history buff, a theater enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful
retreat, the Ancient Theater of Thassos is a must-see destination. Its enduring
beauty and rich history make it a true gem of the Greek islands.
🛍️ The Center Shops & Fast Food
As
we embark on our leisurely stroll through this charming pedestrian area, you'll
find it's a delightful stretch that, while less than 500 meters long, is
brimming with unique character and local charm. This vibrant promenade is a
tapestry of experiences, offering an eclectic mix of souvenir shops, fast food
joints, ice-cream parlors, and inviting restaurants that cater to both locals
and travelers alike.
The
street, known as 18is Octovriou, is a name worth noting if you're inclined to
look it up online. This picturesque path can be easily accessed from the Old Port. Alternatively, if you're following along from
our Waterfront East chapter, simply take a right turn from the main waterfront,
and you'll find yourself at the start of this lively avenue. As you meander
along 18is Octovriou, be sure to explore the smaller, vertical alleys that
branch off from the main street. These narrow lanes are home to a multitude of
quaint taverns, each offering a cozy retreat and a taste of authentic local
cuisine. It's in these hidden gems that you'll truly feel the heartbeat of the
area.
Our
journey wouldn't be complete without a stop to indulge in some traditional
Thassian products, and we have some recommendations that you won't want to
miss. Thasos Island is renowned for its exquisite honey, which is as rich in
flavor as it is in history. The island's honey is often infused with the
essence of wildflowers and pine, creating a taste that is uniquely Thassian. Equally
noteworthy is the island's olive oil, a liquid gold that is a staple in Greek
cuisine. Produced from the island's ancient olive groves, Thassian olive oil is
celebrated for its robust flavor and smooth texture. It's perfect for drizzling
over salads, dipping with fresh bread, or simply savoring on its own. As you
explore, consider picking up some of these exceptional products as souvenirs or
gifts. They not only encapsulate the essence of Thasos but also offer a taste
of the island's rich culinary heritage. Whether it's the golden honey or the
aromatic olive oil, these traditional Thassian specialties are a must-have for
anyone looking to bring a piece of the island back home.
