How to get from Argostoli? Is the road steep?

To reach Myrtos Beach from Argostoli, it's about a 30-minute drive. You can embark on a scenic coastal drive that will take you through picturesque villages and awe-inspiring landscapes. The road leading to the beach does include some steep sections, so make sure to take caution while driving. However, the stunning vistas you'll encounter along the way will make the journey well worth it. Stay tuned until the end of the video for a timelapse of the road route.

Is it organized?

Myrtos Beach is known for its raw and unspoiled beauty, with no major tourist infrastructure in place. At the time of shooting this video, there were no beach umbrellas or sun loungers for rent, so this lack of commercialization allows you to immerse yourself in the unblemished splendour of the surroundings, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts. Recently a number of sunbeds and parasols to rent have been added, including a beach bar and toilet facilities.

Is it deep? Are the waters safe?

The crystal-clear waters of Myrtos Beach are known for their remarkable depth, creating a striking contrast against the white pebbles that line the shoreline. While the waters can be deep, it's important to note that they are generally safe for swimming. However, the beach is known for its strong currents, so it's important to be cautious when swimming. There are lifeguards on duty during the summer months to ensure the safety of swimmers.

Myrtos Beach has earned numerous accolades for its unparalleled beauty, including being voted the best beach in Greece and one of the most magnificent in the world by several travel publications, including TripAdvisor. Parking and taverns?

For visitors travelling by car, Myrtos Beach offers parking facilities, ensuring a convenient and hassle-free experience.

There are also several taverns and cafes nearby where you can grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink, but not by the beach. You'll have to go up to the village of Divarata for the closest ones.

Embarking on a Ferry Adventure: Argostoli to Lixouri

Begin your journey in the heart of Argostoli, at the bustling harbor. Here, you'll find the ferry terminal where vessels depart for the enchanting town of Lixouri on the opposite side of the bay.

Ferry Frequency

The ferry service between Argostoli and Lixouri is a frequent and reliable mode of transportation. Ferries operate regularly throughout the day, providing both locals and visitors with a convenient means of crossing the Ionian Sea.

Should you choose to bring your car along, it's important to note that staying inside the vehicle during the entire journey is generally not permitted. However, there might be some delightful exceptions, as we happened to witness in the following case

Scenic Sail

As you board the ferry, find a comfortable spot to enjoy the scenic sail across the bay. The journey offers mesmerising views of the Koutavos Lagoon, the De Bosset Bridge, and the picturesque landscapes surrounding the bay.

Tickets And Trip Duration

During the summer, ferries operate at intervals ranging from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes, while in the winter, the frequency adjusts to every 30 minutes to an hour. The journey itself spans a duration of 20 to 25 minutes. Tickets can be conveniently purchased directly on the ferry.

As for the pricing, it stands at €2.60 per person, and for those bringing a car along with a driver, the cost is €4.00.

Panoramic Perspectives

Once the ferry sets sail, head to the deck for panoramic perspectives of the Ionian Sea. Feel the gentle sea breeze, soak in the sun, and witness the coastal beauty as you approach the shores of Lixouri.

Lixouri Landing

As the ferry docks in Lixouri, you'll be greeted by the charm of this seaside town. Disembark and take a moment to appreciate the laid-back atmosphere, with colorful buildings and a welcoming ambiance.

Drogarati Cave

Location and Brief Info

Drogarati Cave is located near the village of Chaliotata, about 26 km from Argostoli. The cave was discovered 300 years ago and is estimated to be around 150 million years old. It is one of the most impressive caves in Greece, with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. It first opened to the public in 1963.

Getting There from Argostoli Town

The easiest way to get to Drogarati Cave is by car or taxi. It takes about 40 minutes to drive from Argostoli town. There is also a bus that runs from the town to Sami, which stops near the cave.

Entrance Fee and Visiting Hours

To explore the wonders of Drogarati Cave, there is an affordable entrance fee. The ticket grants you access to this underground paradise, and visiting hours typically run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. It is open all week long. There’s a 10 euros combo ticket if you also want to visit the nearby Melissani Cave lake.

Safety Measures

The cave is safe to visit, but visitors should wear comfortable shoes as there are a number of cement stairs to climb. The stairs can be slippery, so it's important to take your time and watch your step. Just take into consideration that you will have to climb the stairs back up again!

Temperature Inside

As you venture deeper into the cave, you'll be greeted by a pleasantly cool and refreshing temperature. The temperature inside the cave is around 18°C (64°F) all year round. We suppose this natural air conditioning provides a welcome relief from the warm Greek sun, during the scorching summer months!

Capacity and Acoustic Wonders

Drogarati Cave has a capacity of up to 500 people and is known for its great acoustics. In the past, it has been used as a venue for concerts and other events. Rumour has it that Maria Callas was so impressed that she decided to give a concert inside!
