The area was a former monastery which then became the city's Monumental cemetery in 1801.
It was established
over a former monastery of the Order of Carthusians, founded in 1334.
The distance from
city centre is 3 km on foot, but there is a public bus to the main entrance.
An Etruscan
necropolis was discovered in the premises in 1869.
It is usually open
to the public and can be visited daily, if there is no service taking place.
Some of the famous
visitors include: Lord Byron, Charles Dickens and Sigmund Freud.
